After herd roundups for veterinary inspections early this week, the ponies are officially prepared for the 100th Annual Chincoteague Island Pony Swim! Tomorrow from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., approximately 150 horses and foals will swim across the Assateague Channel to the shores of Chincoteague, VA.
July 30th: The Main Pony Swim
Once every year, horseback volunteer firefighters known as the Saltwater Cowboys guide the ponies into the waters of the Assateague Channel. The swim to shore is around 3 to 5 minutes long, but it’s a race to shore for the foals involved! The first colt or filly to reach the sand is crowned “King/Queen Neptune,” a prize for one lucky raffle winner. After a break for the ponies to rest, they are led in a parade down “Pony Swim Lane” to the Carnival Grounds for auction.

Visitor Regulations
This year, the Mayor of Chincoteague has introduced new security measures to keep guests safe. Follow the packing guide below to ensure your visit runs smoothly.
ABSOLUTELY:
- No coolers
- No umbrellas
- No glass containers
- No bags or backpacks
NOTABLE EXCEPTIONS:
- Bags or backpacks that are clear vinyl, plastic, or PVC will be allowed
- One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc or similar)
- Small clutch bags or belt bags are allowed but should not exceed 4.5” X 6.5”, with or without a handle or a strap. These can be carried separately or within a clear plastic bag.
DISCOURAGED:
- Large water bottles
- Thermoses
